This movie sucks. Like really sucks. In general the Purge movies always have something dumb or stupid in them. Fine whatever turn off your brain and enjoy. Not this one though. This movie was so dumb, and so implausible. I need to see a doctor for rolling my eyes so hard. <br/><br/>I can't believe someone greenlit this movie. Like someone sat down and read this script and thought it was good enough to make into a movie. And then other people gave millions of dollars so this movie could be made. That's just sad. Thinking of all the other better movies that could've been made instead of this. <br/><br/>People just do dumb things in this movie. Like why do the people running from the killers turn on the lights to their apartment? Why that feisty woman neighbour is talking/shouting at the top of her lungs so any random purger can walk in and finish the job? Why the brother was going to Brooklyn to avoid the purge, but not his sister? Why does the sister go to the church for safety when it's pretty much the same or better in her own apartment? <br/><br/>Overall I thought the cast was fine, but they just weren't given much to do in this movie. It's cliche after cliche, and presented in the most over the top way possible. Almost every character in the movie is a cliche. The tough but tender sister who is trying to provide a better life for her brother. The gang leader with the heart of gold, and deep down he's a caring person. Until he isn't. The brother who wants a better life, but keeps making stupid decisions. The evil Skeletor who's only sole purpose in the movie is to be evil. Like really really evil. He just goes around Michael Myers style taking people out casually. Who's victims are just standing there like packaged meat in a supermarket. Not one person in that street party has a gun or weapon of some sort? Why are they all running away from him? I thought this was the purge?<br/><br/>I know there's social political commentary throughout this movie. It just wasn't very effective. Everything is presented so ham fisted, and serious (in their minds). That it just takes all the fun out of the movie. I don't know if I should even BE enjoying this movie. I thought this was a B movie? Well it is but… It takes complex themes, and boils them down to it's simplest form. I was almost expecting the camera to pull away, and we find out it's some parent reading their kid some bedtime purge story. <br/><br/>Time to purge this movie from my mind.
I was embarrassed sitting in the theatre. I eventually had enough and walked out! Worst movie of the year. The only positive thing is that, after I tuned it out, I had time to think about the TRASH Hollywood turns out. And I resolved to go to much less movies and be more discerning about the movies I go to. So I'm grateful I will stop seeing these random garbage movies and save some money. <br/><br/>Ok I'm ashamed I would see this immoral twisted movie. What is tragic is that so many people see this trash. What is wrong with us to not know better. We should not be seeing this stuff and maybe the will stop making them.
The film does mix up the formula in some ways. Unfortunately, these changes are by and large for the worse. It edges away from horror and more towards action, favoring shootouts to scares. The latter are in short supply.
